How to Use the Weighted Grade Calculator

Figuring out your grade in a class where some assignments count more than others can be confusing. A 100% on a homework assignment doesn't mean much if it's only worth 5% of your grade, while a 75% on a final worth 50% can massively drop your average. This Weighted Grade Calculator is designed to figure out exactly where you stand mathematically.

To use the calculator, start by entering the names of your assignment categories from your syllabus. Common examples are "Homework", "Quizzes", "Midterm", and "Final Exam". Name them clearly so you can understand your grade breakdown at a single glance.

Next, enter the score you earned, along with the total possible points for that assignment. It will automatically convert to a percentage. Finally, punch in the weight — or how much of your total class grade this specific category takes up. Your teacher's syllabus will typically declare that "Quizzes are worth 20%, Tests are 40%," and so on.

As you input these numbers, the calculator will automatically sum your weighted points. At the very bottom, it will show you your current weighted average. It will also warn you if your category weights do not add up to precisely 100%. If you haven't finished the semester yet, that's okay — simply don't input the final exam, and it will calculate your standing based only on the completed assignments.

Once you know your current average, you might be curious about how to lift it by the end of the year. In that case, jump over to our Final Grade Calculator to see exactly what you need to score on your last test to pass the class, or use our High School GPA Calculator to see how this class will ultimately impact your transcript. If you just need a simple mean score without weights, use our average grade calculator. University students can also estimate their major requirements using our college GPA calculator.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate a weighted grade?
Multiply each of your assignment or category grades by its percentage weight (for example, multiplying an 85% test average by 0.50 for 50%). Do this for all categories, then add the results together to get your final weighted grade.
What does it mean for a class to be weighted?
A weighted class means that different types of work have different impacts on your grade. For instance, tests might make up 60% of your grade, while homework only accounts for 10%.
Why do teachers use weighted grading categories?
Weights are used so that major assessments showing mastery of the subject (like tests or projects) contribute more heavily to a students final grade than smaller day-to-day work like homework.
How can I figure out my current grade if some assignments are not due yet?
If categories are missing, you must scale the existing categories to 100%. Divide each completed categorys weight by the sum of all completed weights before multiplying by your score. Set the calculator to compute based on "categories entered."
Are final exams included in a weighted grade calculation?
Yes, a final exam is usually just treated as a separate weighted category, often making up 10% to 20% of your comprehensive total.
What is the formula for weighted grades?
The formula is: Weighted Grade = Σ (Category Score % × Category Weight %) ÷ Total Weight. In plain terms, multiply each category's percentage score by its weight, add all the results together, then divide by the total weight (usually 100).
How do you calculate a weighted GPA?
A weighted GPA works differently from a weighted class grade — it adds bonus points (commonly +0.5 for Honors and +1.0 for AP/IB classes) to the standard 4.0 grade point value before averaging across all your courses. Use our AP & IB Multiplier Calculator to see exactly how much a specific course boosts your weighted GPA.
