How to Choose a Science Fair Project
A guide to finding the perfect science fair project idea.
Start With a Question, Not a Topic
The most common mistake in picking a science fair project is starting with a broad subject ("volcanoes" or "plants") instead of a specific, testable question. A topic tells a judge nothing about what was actually measured. A question — "Does the amount of baking soda change how high a volcano's eruption sprays?" — immediately shows what will be changed, what will be measured, and what the experiment is actually about. Before choosing anything, turn whatever interests your student into a question that starts with "Does," "How," or "What happens when."
Match the Project to the Grade Level
A project that's too advanced leads to confusion and a rushed, incomplete board. A project that's too simple for the grade can look thin next to classmates' work. As a rule of thumb:
- Kindergarten–1st grade: Simple observation and comparison (which fruit has more seeds, which objects sink or float).
- 2nd–3rd grade: One clear variable with a measurable result (does warm water dissolve sugar faster than cold water).
- 4th–5th grade: A full hypothesis, at least three trials, and a simple bar or line graph.
- 6th grade and up: A control group, a written background research section, and a discussion of possible sources of error.

Check What's Actually Available
Before locking in an idea, confirm three things: the materials are affordable (grocery store or dollar store, ideally), the experiment can be run safely without adult-only equipment, and there's enough time — most solid elementary projects need one to two weeks to run multiple trials, not one night.
Make Sure It Tests One Variable
The scientific method depends on changing exactly one thing at a time. A project that changes both the amount of sunlight AND the amount of water a plant gets can't tell you which factor actually caused the result — and judges will ask about this immediately. If your idea naturally involves two changing factors, pick the more interesting one and hold the other constant.
Write It Down Before You Commit
Once you have a question, write out: what you'll change (the independent variable), what you'll measure (the dependent variable), and what you'll keep the same for every trial (the control). If you can fill in all three clearly in one sentence, the project is ready to start. If you can't, the idea needs to be narrowed down further.
