The Classic Three-Panel Layout
Almost every winning science fair board uses the same basic structure, split across three folding panels:
- Left panel: Question, hypothesis, and background research. This tells a judge what you were trying to find out before they read anything else.
- Center panel: Materials, variables, and step-by-step procedure. This is the "how" — what you actually did.
- Right panel: Results, graphs, and conclusion. This is the payoff — what you found and what it means.
Judges read left to right, so keeping this order means they never have to hunt for information.
Make It Readable From Three Feet Away
Most display boards fail not because of bad science, but because of bad formatting. Headings should be at least 1 inch tall. Body text should be large enough to read comfortably from a few feet back — if you have to squint at your own laptop screen to check the font size, it's too small for a printed board. Use a consistent, simple font throughout instead of mixing several styles.
What Actually Belongs on Each Panel
- Title: Centered at the top, larger than any other text on the board. Make it a question, not a topic ("Does Coffee Help Plants Grow?" not "Plants and Coffee").
- Hypothesis: State it in full, using the "If… then… because…" format so a judge sees your reasoning immediately.
- Photos: Include at least a few "before and after" photos of the experiment in progress — these prove the work actually happened and make the board visually interesting.
- Graphs and charts: A simple bar or line graph showing your actual data is worth more than a page of written numbers. Label both axes clearly.
- Conclusion: State whether the hypothesis was supported, mention at least one source of error, and note what you'd test next.
Common Display Board Mistakes
- Too much text. A board covered edge-to-edge in paragraphs is hard to judge quickly. Use bullet points and short sections instead of long blocks of writing.
- No visuals. A board with only text looks unfinished next to boards with photos and graphs.
- Missing labels. Every graph needs a title and labeled axes, or the data is meaningless to anyone but you.
- Handwriting instead of printing. Typed, printed text is easier to read and looks more polished for judged categories.
