How to Write a Hypothesis for a Science Fair Project
A step-by-step guide to writing a perfect hypothesis for your science fair experiment.
The "If… Then… Because…" Format
A hypothesis is not a guess — it's a testable prediction backed by a reason. The easiest way to write one that judges immediately recognize as correct is the three-part format:
- If [I change this one thing]…
- then [this measurable result will happen]…
- because [here's the scientific reason why].
Example: "If I water plants with coffee instead of water, then they will grow taller, because coffee contains nitrogen, which plants use to build new cells." Notice that all three parts are specific — not "coffee is good for plants," but an exact, measurable outcome with a stated reason.
A Hypothesis Must Be Testable and Measurable
"Music makes plants happy" isn't testable — "happy" can't be measured. "Plants exposed to classical music for two hours a day will grow taller over two weeks than plants in silence" is testable, because height in centimeters is something you can actually record. Before finalizing a hypothesis, ask: could someone else read this and know exactly what to measure and how? If the answer is no, it needs to be more specific.
Common Mistakes Students Make
- Writing a question instead of a statement. "Does sunlight affect plant growth?" is a question. "If a plant gets more sunlight, then it will grow taller, because sunlight powers photosynthesis" is a hypothesis.
- Skipping the "because." The reason is what shows a judge you understand the science, not just the outcome. Never leave it out.
- Predicting something you can't measure. Stick to outcomes you can count, weigh, time, or measure in centimeters or degrees.
- Changing more than one variable. A hypothesis should only ever test one independent variable at a time — otherwise you can't know which change caused the result.
It's Okay to Be Wrong
A hypothesis doesn't need to turn out to be correct — some of the most respected science fair projects are ones where the data disagreed with the prediction, and the student clearly explained why. Judges care much more about whether the hypothesis was well-reasoned and properly tested than whether it was "right."
