Quarter Grade Calculator: Type Your Scores, See Your Grade

Use this free quarter grade calculator to list the scores in each category, such as homework, quizzes and tests, and say how much each category counts. You get your quarter grade and letter. Leave a category empty if it has no scores yet, and the calculator shows what you need on it for each letter.

Your categories

For each category, type its scores separated by commas, spaces or new lines. A plain number such as 88 is a percentage. Points such as 17/20 also work, and you can mix them.

Total weight entered: 0%

Check your syllabus. The two methods give the same answer when every assignment is worth the same number of points.
These are example scales, not universal standards. Schools and teachers set their own cutoffs. Choose Custom to enter yours.

Quarter grade calculator: the quick answer

Your quarter grade is the weighted average of your category averages. Average the scores in each category, multiply each average by its weight, add the results, and divide by the total weight. In the example below, homework 85% (weight 20), quizzes 75% (weight 20) and tests 78% (weight 40) give (1,700 + 1,500 + 3,120) ÷ 80 = 79%, a C on the standard scale. The quarter grade calculator above does this for you and also shows what you need on any category that has no scores yet.

Quarter grade calculator example: homework 85%, quizzes 75% and tests 78% weighted to a 79% quarter grade
Quarter grade calculator example: three categories with scores and one still to come.

How the quarter grade calculator works

Most teachers sort a marking period into categories such as homework, quizzes, tests and projects, and give each category a share of the quarter. To find your grade, average the scores in each category, multiply each average by its weight, add those up and divide by the total weight.

This quarter grade calculator does the first step for you. Type the scores themselves and it works out each category average. If you already know each category’s average, the weighted grade calculator takes the averages directly. If your quarter is simply points added up with no categories, use the points-based grade calculator.

How to use the quarter grade calculator: entering scores

  • Percentages: type 88 or 88%. A plain number is read as a percentage.
  • Points: type 17/20 for 17 points out of 20. Points and percentages can be mixed in one category.
  • Separators: commas, spaces, semicolons or new lines all work.
  • Zeros: type 0 for a missing assignment that counts as zero. An empty category is treated as work still to come, not as zero.

Quarter grade calculator: percentages or total points

Teachers average a category in two ways, and they can give different answers. With average of the percentages, every assignment counts equally. With total points, a bigger assignment counts for more.

Example: three homework scores of 9/10, 30/50 and 18/20 are 90%, 60% and 90%. The average of the percentages is 80%. The total points are 57 out of 80, which is 71.25%. Check your syllabus, then choose the method it describes.

Dropping the lowest score in the quarter grade calculator

Some teachers drop each student’s lowest homework or quiz score. Tick the drop option and the calculator removes the lowest score in every category that has two or more scores, then averages the rest. If a score ties for lowest, one of them is dropped. The breakdown table tells you when a score was dropped. The option applies to every category at once, so if your teacher drops scores only in some categories, leave it off and delete that one score by hand.

What the quarter grade calculator shows for unfinished categories

Enter a weight and leave the scores empty for a category you have not started, such as a project. The quarter grade calculator then shows:

  • Your grade so far, counting only the categories that have scores.
  • The lowest and highest possible quarter grade, if you scored 0% or 100% on everything left.
  • The average you need on the empty categories for every grade on your scale, marked as secured or out of reach where that is true.

If weights do not add up to 100, the calculator divides by the total you entered and tells you. Check your syllabus in that case, because a missing category changes the result.

Quarter grade calculator formulas and a worked example

Quarter grade = Sum of (category average × weight) ÷ Sum of weights Average needed on the rest = (Target × Total weight − Sum of average × weight so far) ÷ Weight not graded

The letter is the first grade on the scale, counting down from the top, whose minimum is at or below the result. A result exactly on a cutoff earns that grade. The full rules are on the grading methodology page.

Example: homework scores 100, 90, 80, 70 (weight 20), quizzes 15/20, 18/20, 12/20 (weight 20), tests 82 and 74 (weight 40), and a project worth 20 with no scores yet.

Worked example with a project still to come
QuestionResultStandardPlus/minus
Category averagesHomework 85%, quizzes 75%, tests 78%
Grade so far (6,320 ÷ 80)79%CC+
Lowest possible (0% on the project)63.2%DD
Highest possible (100% on the project)83.2%BB
Needed on the project for 80%84%BB-
Needed on the project for 90%134%Out of reach

To finish with 80% you need 8,000 weighted points. You have 85 × 20 + 75 × 20 + 78 × 40 = 6,320, so the project must supply 1,680 over its weight of 20, which is 84%. With the drop option on, the same scores give homework 90%, quizzes 82.5% and tests 82%, so the grade so far rises to 84.13%, a B.

Quarter grade calculator questions

Is this quarter grade calculator free and private?

Yes. It is free, needs no sign-up, and runs in your browser. Your scores are not sent anywhere or saved.

What if a category has no scores yet?

Enter its weight and leave the scores empty. It is counted as work still to come, not as zero. Type 0 if you want a missing assignment to count as zero.

Can I type points instead of percentages?

Yes. Type 17/20 for 17 points out of 20. You can mix percentages and points in one category.

Do the weights have to add up to 100?

No, but they normally do. If they do not, the calculator divides by the total you entered and shows a note.

What does “drop the lowest score” do?

It removes the lowest score in each category that has two or more scores before averaging. Leave it off if your teacher does not drop scores.

Why is my result shown as 90% but graded as a B?

The value was rounded for display only. A result like 89.5% is graded on the unrounded number, and the page tells you when this happens. If your teacher rounds first, turn on “Round before grading” in Settings.

Does it save my scores?

No. Only your scale and display settings are saved on this device. Your scores stay in the page and are not sent anywhere.

Is this quarter grade calculator the grade my school will record?

It is a quick, transparent calculation. Your instructor or school sets the official grade. See the disclaimer.
